South Africa v Australia 1st Test Betting Preview: Suggested Bets and Predictions – 9 October 2026
South Africa face Australia at Kingsmead in Durban from Friday, 9 October, in the opening match of a three-Test series.
It is Australia’s first Test series in South Africa since 2018 and follows the Proteas’ five-wicket victory over Australia in the 2025 World Test Championship final at Lord’s.
Australia have named a strong 16-man squad featuring Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon. South Africa, meanwhile, have the advantage of home conditions and several players who performed particularly well when the teams last met.
The odds below are predicted prices rather than confirmed bookmaker odds and could change once the final teams are announced.

Australia Bring a Powerful Bowling Attack
Australia’s biggest strength is their ability to take 20 wickets.
Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood provide one of Test cricket’s most experienced pace attacks, with Scott Boland and Michael Neser offering additional options. Lyon and Matthew Kuhnemann are the specialist spinners.
South Africa know exactly how dangerous that attack can be. They were dismissed for only 138 in the first innings of the World Test Championship final, with Cummins taking 6/28.
The Proteas recovered brilliantly, however. Kagiso Rabada finished the match with nine wickets before Aiden Markram’s 136 helped South Africa successfully chase 282 to win the title.
Kingsmead could again favour the seamers, making the respective bowling attacks particularly important to the betting markets.
Suggested Bets and Predicted Odds
Australia to win – predicted odds: 2.10 to 2.30
South Africa deserve respect at home, particularly after beating Australia at Lord’s, but Australia could offer the better price.
Their ability to select Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon gives them exceptional bowling depth, while Steve Smith and Travis Head provide considerable experience with the bat.
At odds above 2.00, Australia could be an attractive match-winner option.
Kagiso Rabada over 4.5 match wickets – predicted odds: 1.80 to 2.00
Rabada took nine wickets against Australia in the World Test Championship final, including 5/51 in the first innings.
If Kingsmead provides assistance for the seamers, he should again be South Africa’s major wicket-taking threat. A line of 4.5 wickets across both Australian innings would be worth considering.
Aiden Markram 50+ match runs – predicted odds: 1.65 to 1.80
Markram’s 136 at Lord’s was the decisive batting performance when these teams last met.
Australia’s pace attack makes a century market relatively risky, but backing Markram to score at least 50 runs across both innings provides considerably more margin for error.
Match Prediction: Australia to Edge a Close Test
South Africa have home advantage and confidence from their World Test Championship victory, while Rabada gives them a genuine match-winning threat with the ball.
Australia’s bowling depth, however, makes them extremely difficult to dismiss as a betting option. Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon provide several different ways of taking wickets, and the visitors also have substantial Test experience in their batting order.
This should be much closer than the average South African home Test, but Australia are the narrow selection.
